Steelers

January 31, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Leisure

Ok I’ll admit. I am from Pittsburgh. I love my hometown. It’s unique and has a history unlike anywhere I’ve been. I am also a Steeler’s Fan. Some years we’re really good and other years we’re just good. We’re everywhere across the Earth and space. I now live in Arizona. Home of the Cardinals. Unless you live under a rock right now, you know there’s a football game this weekend. I remember reading about the Ravens fans who visited Pittsburgh for the AFC conference championship at Heinz Field, and the newspapers were interviewing them to ask about how Pittsburghers had been treating them. The Baltimore fans were surprised that Steeler fans were so nice and cordial. The Steelers went on to beat the Ravens and advance to the Superbowl. So did the Cardinals. The Cardinals hadn’t been to a championship game in 61 years and they’ve made it. That’s awesome. I am very happy for the Cardinals.

I’ve been in Arizona for almost a decade now. My wife and I love our new town (weather not withstanding!), and everything is wonderful here. Until two weeks ago.

Now I wear the same Steeler’s Gear I’ve worn all along, but people treat me differently. Friends and colleagues poke good natured fun at me and my team. I ignore them. Some of them I know have been Cardinals fans for years, and others have been Cardinals fans for minutes. It got worse. Less good natured. People I barely know saying crass things to me. Then complete strangers. People on the streets. I deleted most of the comments from Facebook and rarely retorted back. Last night after a movie I walked through the parking lot to my truck to the jeers “Steelers Suck” from a truck full of men. I was alone. It was almost midnight. Not fun. Today I take my kid to a garage sale, and the owner of the house turns to his wife “Look a Steeler’s Fan. Go get our gun.” I was wife my friggin’ kid. I get to the car dealer. The manager sees my shirt, and he says “For Steelers’ Fans we charge double”. Then he chuckles. Ok, I am done with it.

If you’ve been a Cardinals fan for years, then I’m happy for you. Good luck tomorrow. If you’ve been a Cardinals fans for a coupe of months, since they’ve gotten good, or only for 2 weeks, then shut the hell up. Don’t give me crap about my team, because no matter if the Steelers win or lose tomorrow, we have one of the best teams in the NFL. We have decades worth of wonderful fans across the globe who are proud of who we are and what we represent. We have a family owned team who never sold out and less coaches turnover than any other team ever. We (usually) hear great things about our team from complete strangers everywhere we go. The Steelers have won more Superbowls than everyother team except the Cowboys and 49ers, and that might change tomorrow. I can hope, pray, and cheer, but I am not out there making crass jokes to any Cardinal fan. And I am done hearing it.

Not really sure

January 30, 2009 By: nooccar Category: health

These last two weeks I’ve been in a funk. Not really sure why, but mostly I sleep. Now since taking my current full time job about 5 years ago, I’ve been getting up before 5AM and most nights I am in bed before 10PM. That’s 7 hours of sleep, and that should be enough. But recently I’ve been tired all of the time. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t tell you many times in my adult life where I am not tired, and I bet you I could go to sleep anywhere at anytime, but recently my tiredness has gone to a new level. Everyday this week I’ve come home from work and fallen asleep. Just like that. I pick Claire up from school, bring her home, get her situated with whatever she wants/likes, and I go to sleep. Mostly I try to sleep on the couch, so I am near her. Two nights ago she wanted to play her Vtech Dora educational video game, so I sat down on the edge of my expansive coffee table and clicked over to the AV source on the TV remote; next thing I knew, it was 45 minutes later, she was playing the game, and I was in the fetal position across the coffee table sleeping. Donna told me I just need more sleep, so last night I went to bed at at 9:30-ish. I woke at 12:30AM, 1:17AM, 2:30AM, 3:16AM, and rolled out of bed at 4:33AM. I just can’t win this game.

It’s so obvious, Dad!

January 23, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Claire, Parenthood

Tonight I headed home early from work so I could work on my English 102 course in WebCT. Of course since I was headed home early today to work, WebCT was down. It’s never bothered me before because I don’t usually use this CMS but this school year I do. This sucked for me. I had 4 out of 20 students emailing me before 3:00PM. So here I was sitting at home, ready to work. Claire was balling because Daddy wanted to watch adult TV instead of her watching some cartoon. I got to a point where I didn’t want to deal anymore, so I told her to get her butt into my bedroom where our small second tv sits. I put in her DVD and hit play. Fifteen minutes later she came out and said she had paused it to go potty and couldn’t turn it back on. She was carrying the remote.

The remote was up on top of the file cabinet where the tv is when I left the room. I asked Claire how she got the remote, and she simply told me “I used my tippy toes”. To her, this was the obvious answer. She couldn’t’ve been more clear if she just replied with “Doh!” I sat down in the bedroom with her and showed her the play button and the pause button. We put the show back on and I headed back out to the living room. A few minutes later she came back and said she was done watching.

She hung out for a few minutes, and then disappeared. I went in after hearing the tv on. She was in my bed with our blanket pulled up to her chest, chewing on chocolate cookies, and watching a new DVD. I asked what she was doing, and she simply told me that she was watching a new DVD as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

The not so curious case of Benjamin Button: A Review

January 18, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Movies, Reviews

I am a huge fan of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and The Great Gatsby is one of the best half dozen books yet published in this world, so I walked into Benjamin Button kinda curious of what would happen. I am well aware that millions of dollars were thrown at this film (a ton at the headliners salaries alone). Think Pitt, Blanchett, Ormond, Swinton. Pitt’s face is across the front cover of the poster so you do not forget you’re going to see his film, although in the actual film he didn’t do much for me. It’s difficult to be such a big budget film and not be enjoyable, and I don’t see many places where they could’ve trimmed the 160 minute film but I think I wanted to think more. I didn’t have to think, which made more time to listen to the squeaky theatre seat near me and never forget I was watching Blanchett and Pitt romp around the middle of the twentieth century.

Pitt & Blanchett

Pitt & Blanchett

Don’t get me wrong. The screen play adaption was done well, the original is on my shelf, and I am curious enough to pick it up, but, as I said, Pitt just plays Pitt for me. Blanchett does wonderfully well, but not Oscar-worthy well (think Aviator’s Kate Hepburn toned way way way down). I did appreciate the juxtaposition of Pitt’s remarks about her blue of Blanchett’s eyes and then his foray with Swinton (who scares the hell outta me with those coal black eyes, pale pale demeanor and skin, and those androgynous features) albeit I hated the banality of the hummingbird who appears twice in the film (this is NO Zemeckis feather motif!!).

If you appreciated the special effects of Forrest Gump or the makeup of other period pieces, then this will be ok for you, too. Since I didn’t even realize Caroline (one of our narrators) was played by Julia Ormond, she must’ve been ok since, for me, she disappeared into character. The characters who age (or some who fail to) are relatively convincingly painted to look their ages, although some ages effects annoyed me when it came to Pitt. Another key player (to a degree) was Captain Mike (Jared Harris) who I appreciated for who and what he represented: an askew father figure in some ways as whimsically absent as Mr. Button (Jason Flemyng) is painstakingly present.

There are no real spoilers here. He dies. She dies. That’s it. But do we care? Some audience members cried, but my question was why? We know the end. I suppose for the same reason people still cry and gasp when Juliet stabs herself in the gut, but for me this film was Forrest Gump meets The Notebook, and it’s one notebook that’s fun for a night and quite forgettable in the long haul.

Gran Torino: The Best of 2008

January 17, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Movies, Reviews

Been seeing previews for Gran Torino and it looked like a cross between Million Dollar Baby andDirty Harry. The early trailers weren’t doing much for me, but then the secondary trailers had some nice plot development and intrigue. I was more interested in catching MILK or The Reader today, but something drew me to this movie. And you know what that was? It was the BEST MOVIE OF 2008.

Yes, I declared this now. The nominees aren’t out yet even, and I am usually more reserved in my reviews. I just can’t be that reserved here. I literally walked out of the film and wanted to sit in the car and sob. Sob like a little baby.

We know Eastwood is good. He’s always been good, although his gravely voice was off putting (much like Bale’s in another much hyped film). In this film Eastwood plays Walt Kowalski, a Korean war veteran, who’s stuck in back a 1/2 century. His wife recently died, his self-absorbed sons and grand children just suck, and the catholic priest is played by a boy (Christopher Carley) who looks like he just got his driver’s license, although through his tenacity the audience can’t help but want to pinch his cheeks by the second hour in. Eastwood’s gravely snarl is punctuated by the Hmong people who’ve overtaken most of his Detroit suburb. Ever Asian racial slur you could imagine is used by Eastwood in this film and the man sitting next to me scoffing at everyone one were both quite bothersome. It felt overdone to a fault (no I do not hear people actually talk like this anywhere.)

Eastwood saves the life of Thao (Bee Vang) from a local gang and begins to teach the boy to be a man. Thao bugs the hell out of me, not because he’s a “wimp” so much than his mannerisms, haircut (which he could’ve easily changed in a hilarious barber shop scene!), and fact that his true transformation never really comes to fruition except at the very end of the film (and that’s even a week show of it).

I understand this is an Eastwood vehicle all around (included his real life sons), but , for me, Thao’s sister, Sue, stole the show! Introduced as the youngest in a house of women and the older, bossy (well meaning) sister of Thao, Sue is the vehicle who brings the racist and reluctant Walt into the Hmong culture, her home and her people. Ahney Her playing Sue has never acted before, but I was surprised at how refreshingly she holds her own through her seamless banter with one of the most talented actors of his generation. Typically, I am writing these reviews after nominations have been released, and I have no idea if Her will even receive a nod, but here I assert she deserves the nod. Now, for some, being nominated (especially in a first role), is the reward itself, and we both know that Her’ll be up against some talented and experienced actresses. If nominated, I fear she will not win.

Gran Torino
Linktribution

Spoilers….Now earlier I mentioned that I sobbed in the end. True. Totally true. This hardass who beats a Hmong gang member, shoves his fists through glass windows, and pokes guns at asians and blacks alike, would be expected to seek out retribution in the same manner as he lived his life through the film. This wasn’t true. This isn’t how it ended. He made a decision for his new family and friends, made good with his dead wife and her priest, and found peace in salvation through his sacrifice of himself for Thao & Sue.

The ’72 Gran Torino that Eastwood never drives in the film weaves itself through the narrative as a harken back to a time when Walt worked for Ford (and put the drive shaft in on the line himself), an american car company, when his wife was alive and his sons weren’t as self-absorbed as they’ve become. Back to a time before when American was “American”. As Walt progressed, developed, and opened himself to Thao, Sue, and his neighbors, the Gran Torino became a symbols of manhood of Thao (who was given permission to take it for his first date) ad a rite of passage for him, as he is given this car, by Walt, in his will at the resolution of the film.

Sue’s simple survival of the rape and beating, Thao’s slow progression to manhood and succession, the priest’s realization of what living and dying really means, brings together a neighborhood, a people, and everything that Walt once felt stratified his neighborhood and his contemporary and disgusting life. A life that he finally lived for those around him, who he came to love.

Riding’ the light rail

January 14, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Claire, Parenthood, Travel

While growing up in Pittsburgh and traveling extensively domestically and internationally public transportation was a given. During grad school I rode the bus and subway daily with my mum to town from the suburbs. When we moved to Phoenix, the paucity of public transportation surprised me. We have a bus system here, but it’s terrible. The Port Authority Transit (PAT) system in Pittsburgh rocked. The buses were on time and went everywhere we wanted to go. In Phoenix, I couldn’t even tell how bad the buses are. Several years ago now, we, Arizona residents, voted in a proposition to raise money for a light rail system (think subways or trolleys above ground). The light rail system opened at the beginning of this month.

Claire and I decided we to take the light rail into Phoenix to go to the downtown farmer’s market Saturday. She’d never been on public transportation (other than the airport shuttle), so it was fun for both of us. We packed our belongings and headed out. The light rail was packed because it’s such a novelty right now, but we found seats.

I think I expected the light rail to move quicker, as it took an hour to get from Apache & 101 to Central Avenue. Along the way there were a ton of cool places to go back to, including restaurants and bars I’ve never seen. The train also passed the AZ Science Center (to where we have a membership!), Chase Field and America West Arena. It also passed two cool breakfast places and then headed up Central Ave towards my destination. There’s a lot of new businesses cropping up along the route, and I expect even more within a year or so.

We’d gotten moving after morning gymnastics, so it was a little later than I’d hoped. As we walked up to the market, a man was pulling down the welcome sign. I glanced down at my watch and saw it was 12:59. I sure wish I’d seen that it closed at 1pm! We moved quickly around and picked up a couple things as they closed up shop. Claire bought some honey, and I bought a carton of dates. We walked down Central just to check out what was around. We came upon Central Station and hopped the train home. Claire slept most of the way home, and I enjoyed the trip but knew if I’d just driven up then it would’ve been way quicker (think about it, I could’ve driven to Payson and back). For commuters, the train’s great because you’re not sitting in rush hour (time to sleep, read, listen to music, or work while someone else drives you to work downtown).

Here comes the Oscars: Review: Seven Pounds

January 10, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Reviews

I think it’s been a decade now since we began our annual Oscar party. The first one was Donna, Dana, me and a pizza, and by last year, it was catered. How fun. Beginning a year or two ago, I began seeing as many of the Oscar films as I could that were nominated. With a kid at home, it wasn’t like the wife and I could just run out whenever we wanted. We had to be creative. Most I saw alone. I am more obsessive with the whole concept. Back in the day we had over two months to catch the ones we wanted to see after nominations were announced, and now we have one more exactly. Ugh. So begins my yearly sojourn.

Today was the first film. I know nominations don’t actually come out until January 22nd, but there are certain movies that fit the Oscar mold. For example, if Kate Winslet is in it and it’s not a comedy, it’s nominated. If Streep, Dench, Washington, Smith, Eastwood, etc… is in it, it’s nominated. If it cost a shitload to make, it’s probably nominated. So today’s movie was a toss up between Gran Torino or Seven Pounds. Gran Torino was more recently released, and I heard great things (and one bad review that I intrigued me) about Seven Pounds, so here I went.

I will say right here and now, that these will pretty much all have SPOILERS. If that kinda stuff pisses you off, STOP READING NOW.

Rosario Dawson & Will Smith
From Flickr via Cine Fanatico

The student who didn’t like (read: understand) Seven Pounds decided to tell me right away that Smith died by jellyfish in the end. Not cool. Not cool at all. Why would you do that to me? So I knew that much, but Joey said there was way more to it, but everytime i saw the damn jellyfish in the film, it sucked a little for me.

I remember seeing the trailer for this film awhile back, and I knew it was the kind of play where you’re just suppose to HAVE TO SEE IT because YOU NEED TO KNOW! And I can see why some people would be disappointed, if they can’t appreciate what the “it” really is.

Smith plays “Ben Thomas” an alleged IRS agent who seems much more (more much less) than that. For most of the first 80-90 minutes the audience isn’t really sure, albeit some people said they knew right away. What did I know? What did I learn? I knew that the jellyfish would kill him and that Emily’s pager would buzz. Pretty much it. And of course we all knew (from the trailer) that he’d give away the house.

I enjoyed the mystique of the film and didn’t mind the sections that were slower, and I understood relatively quickly that seven people had died and it was his fault. His fiancee being played by Smith’s real life with didn’t bother me at all, and I really enjoyed his relationship with Rosario Dawson’s Emily.

Many of my friends said they cried at the end, and yes, tears were forming for me, too, but I understood why and how. When his brother finally sits down with Emily and lays everything out for her (which was subtle enough) I felt like the payout was definitely there in the end. The one thing that did bother me though was that Will Smith, in this film, is looking like death warmed over. I don’t know if the Fresh Prince is getting stale (in appearance) or if he was suppose to look that bad, but it wasn’t something I could really get over in this film. Overall, great flick and would recommend to most intellectually minded people.

Technology & Three year olds

January 08, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Claire, Parenthood, Technology

I’ve talked elsewhere about the fact that today’s generation has essentially been born with keyboards & mouses (mice doesn’t sound right here) fused to them. My 21 year old cousin had his hands on a keyboard from the age of 5; he’s now a web designer. Our kids today know a language that didn’t exist when we were young. They don’t know writing on typewriters and mailing letters in odd large metal blue mailboxes. They’ve never needed quarters for payphones.

As for my own child, she enjoys shopping at the Apple store (preferably at Chandler Mall). We’re there often. (Mama says too often.) I will never own PCs again, and we’re quickly becoming a MAC family. Claire loves to play with the Macs at the store. Today she wanted to play the 5-7 year old games, and then she was excited, called me over, and showed me that she’d typed her own name. WOW.

A Danish visit

January 04, 2009 By: nooccar Category: Friends, Travel

Dan & Madeline moved to Amsterdam in February 2008, and since then I haven’t seen them until today. They called a month ago to say they’d be in AZ around New Year, and we realized our schedule would overlap just for this evening. We flew back from Pittsburgh this morning, got a ride home, picked up the dog, had lunch and watched the Cardinals kill the Falcons before Dan & Madeline got here with dinner.

Their daughters are 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 and Claire’s 3 1/2, so we all figured our house would be better than going out. It was freshly clean since we’d not been here so we quickly agreed for them to bring dinner.

Dan’s an Intel engineer doing an Expat program, and while Madeline’s in Amsterdam she’s picking up another law degree. Lilliane and Amelie are enjoying learning from the nannies and taking in a culture many american children aren’t exposed to at this age. We spoke of family, holidays and work over a nice meal, which was finished with cake and black tea for Dan & I and wine for the ladies. The girls played nicely together after the Mahoney girls realized Claire’s agressiveness was mostly just excitement to have her friends come over. (I know she shouldn’t remember Amelie, but I sure bet she remembers Liilane.)

We talked, enjoyed each other’s company, watch Peyton bite it in HD, and then we all said goodbye so they could head back to the hotel to pack and fly back to the Netherlands tomorrow.
