In-law visit

July 06, 2008 By: nooccar Category: Claire, House, Parenthood

My inlaws have been in town for a few weeks now (my mother-in-law flew in on Father’s Day), and they’ve kept Claire so busy. I’ve learned a lot from my father-in-law and really appreciate how he’s been able to teach Claire so much. But you know what? He’s also taught me. Taught me a little bit about myself as a father and as a man. He also has been very helpful showing me how to do house projects that I’ve put off simply because I wasn’t sure how to do them. We sanded and stained my coffee table, we worked outside, we had electrical work done on the house, and we hung peg board (the right way) in my shed. At times, I wanted to take short cuts, but he’s always so meticulous, and I understand why. I truly appreciated this visit.

For Father’s Day I gave my dad a card basically explaining that if there’s anything he’s ever taught me, it’s Norm’s (Old Yankee Workshop/This Old House) famous words, “Measure twice, cut once.”
