Right Place, Right Time
Sometimes people say that I am just in the right place at the right time.
I figured while I was on break I would take a few classes at the community college where I teach English part time. I’ve taken classes before with Shelley, who is a fulltimer in the English Department, and she was offering a course using sites like PageFlakes, Furl, BlogLines, and NewsGator. And I wanted more information on RSS feeds and the like. Several of the people present were luddites, and my questions seemed to be a little more advanced than questions like the one guy asked, who said "why should we bother blogging at all?" Doh!
So eventually Shelley realized I am English adjunct and I know technology. "Why don’t you come teach English 102 online for us?" She asked… "Meet with me to talk about it sometime" She suggested… "Get the ‘Shelley Stamp of Approval’."
My only problem I ever have with teaching adjunct is driving there as fast as I can after a long day at the high school to drop off Claire, switch cars, and shift into professor mode like Clark Kent in a revolving phone booth. Shelley’s comment was a dream come true. I also seem to take my technology obsessions for granted and never thought it’d get me further than being webmaster here or photo editing for friends there. Now someone was talking to me about teaching English online. My two loves fused together.
I met with Shelley for the coveted stamp of approval and think I received it. Especially since two hours later, my supervisor, Joan, says "so I hear you’re teaching online for us." News travels fast. And now I wait for Shelley to contact me next week after rebuilding the course. Woohoo.
