purse germs

March 19, 2006 By: turtlegirl Category: Miscelany

Did you know that one of the dirtiest objects you interact with on a regular basis is your purse?  OK, all the guys are saying, "uh, not MY purse".  Whatever.  I watched a segment of the news that tested the bottom’s of women’s purses and I have since blanked out all of the pertinent details other than my initial reaction:  "EW!".  Apparently, we sit our purses on the floor of public restrooms when we’re doing our business and the purse collects the germs that are sprayed about when people flush.  Then we leave the restroom and sit our purses everywhere, including restaurant tables, and spread the feces around!  If I ever felt like scrubbing my skin raw with a loofah sponge, now would be that time.

Hooks. Use the hooks on the doors to hang the darn things up in the stalls. Don’t even put them on the floors! (A good idea to remember that when considering sitting the baby down on the floor in a public place.) See…there was this experiment or study I remember learning about my nursing program…were they put some red powder on some object and tracked where all it went. The powder trail mimicked the path of GERMS!! And, boy, did it ever get around!! I think it was put on a doorknob. It went from the doorknob to the hands to mouth/nose/eyes. To the next person via the hand or from the hand to a book to the next persons mouth/nose/eyes. All those “mucous membranes” that germs travel on to make one SICK! The single thing that consistently interupted the path of the spread of red powder (aka GERMS) was the whole HAND WASHING business. That just cut it right off. Helped ALOT! Just all by itself. After using the restroom…(duh!)…before eatting. (After touching the bottom of your purse?!?!?!) All that stuff. Just like my grandmother used to preach about. She didn’t have that alcohol gel stuff, either. Hunh….she was a nurse too. Wonder if the study was THAT old or if it just confirmed what they knew all along?
